It was our first time visiting Kefalonia and we decided to stay here at the Metaxatos Apartments after reading the glowing reviews. I am so glad we did because we had a lovely time and couldnt have asked more of such a lovely hotel. The staff here go above and beyond for you. We got to know Paul & Christina (the owners) throughout our stay and we were made to feel welcome from the start. A big mention to Katie who is amazing and looks after everyone throughout the day! We found the location to be perfect! A quiet spot but just a 15 minute walk into Argostoli via the main road or a nice scenic coastal 5km walk which we ran a few times at sunsrise and was beautiful. There are a few local beaches and a supermarket just 5-10 minutes away. Lots of choices of restaurants along the strip but also good selection at the pool bar during the day for breakfast/lunch. The rooms had everything that was needed. Simple but clean and stunning views over the sea. Also free safe and air con. We met some lovely people whilst we were here- majority of who are regular returners to the hotel which speaks volumes. We loved it so much we have booked to return again next year! Thank you for an amazing holiday and see you next year!

Lovely relaxing place, with friendly people.

Our second stay at these wonderful family run apartments and equally as idyllic as our first trip in 2020. A little busier for obvious reasons. We had a sea view studio room towards the back of the resort with easy access to the road to take you into Agostoli and a very short walk down to the pool area and lower road to the beach. Words can’t really do the view justice but it’s truly mesmerising. Paul and Christina are so friendly and welcoming as are the other members of their team, not forgetting the two new rescue dogs! We shall be back for our next visit asap!

The apartments, pool and pool bar are just wonderful. We stayed in Apartment Ena and it was perfect. Fantastic sea view. Apartment had beds in living space and a separate bedroom. Had all you need especially a fridge (with Freezer compartment) and fantastic air con. Pool was lovely and no sun bed wars here. Plenty of loungers all with a parasol. Pool was open until sunset which was a great bonus. Pool bar serves great food and cocktails, all at a reasonable price. Closet beach was Kalamia Beach which we thought was best. Lovely and quiet with calm sea. Great for rock pooling and snorkeling Walk into Argostoli took about 15 mins down very steep hill. Definitely take the bus or taxi back! Dolphin Supermarket nearby has everything you need and more

We flew for Gatwick with Easyjet and the flight was 2hr and 50 mins we had pre booked a private transfer with Easyjet and got us to the apartments in 10 mins after leaving the airport and the pickup for the return was on time. One point here with hindsight is that if you are thinking of hiring a car is to book it and collect it from the airport as it is much cheaper than in the resort i.e. for 3 days with full insurance was 120 Euro with Lemon Cars for a Kia Picanto. We arrived at the Metaxatos apartments and was met by Christina who showed us to our 2 bedroom apartment which was above the pool area with nice views across the sea to Lixouri. The apartment was bright, Free safe and Aircon worked well. I found the shower in the bathroom to be a bit Bijou and cramped and I’m only 13 stone. Although the towels and bed linen were changed every 3 days and bins emptied daily Beds were never made up just the bottom sheet fitted and the top sheet and blanket placed on top, maybe this is common place in Kefalonia. There is a nice relaxed bar and pool area , no loud music reasonable sunbeds and comfy chairs overlooking the sea. Katie at the bar is the real star of the apartments serving nice snacks and cocktails although I was disappointed that they did not have any Mamos or Alfa beers in the 500 ml size, all bottled beer was 330 ml sizes. Because it was the first week of October things were obviously winding down, no entertainment provided apart from the TV but it wasn’t really an issue. Sitting on the balcony in the evening there are lovely sunsets but while we were there there was someone in the valley with a grinding machine sharpening tools? that went on for a couple of hours around the time the sun was setting , even the Sto Psito restaurant seemed to turn their music up to block out the sound for the diners. What was an issue for us was the location of the apartments which are right at the end of the strip going out of Lassi to Argostoli. To get to Argostoli you can either walk up some steep steps and paths within the apartment complex or the longer route back to the Dolphin Supermarket then back up the hill to go down to Argostoli, or if you are really fit take the long route which is 5km turning right as you leave the hotel. My wife found the steep paths and walkways difficult as she is asthmatic. To get back to the hotel in the evening when its dark you will need a torch (phone?) as the 100yds from the dolphin supermarket is badly lit and you are walking in the road with no footpath. From the apartments to Makris Gialos beach around a 1 mile walk then steep steps down to the beach, 20-25 mins. The beach is lovely but unless you have deep pockets avoid Costa Costa who in the summer were charging 60 euro for the front 2 rows. We turned right and went straight to the other end where 2 beds and parasol were 20 euro. If you are going down to Gradika Beach on the road down from the Dolphin Supermarket which is about 400yds and quite steep, then go to the bottom of the road turn left BUT you then have to keep walking or driving about 100yds to get to the beach with a café and toilet facilities. Kalimia beach is nice but awful access there are two paths , one right next to the Sto Psito restaurant and one about 20 yds further with a broken metal gate, that is the better path in my opinion but again steep and uneven. There is a bar for drinks and snacks but no toilets. 15 euro for 2 beds and Parasol, it was 10Euro at Gradika but it was the end of season. We tried several different restaurants but some were already closing at the beginning of October. Kefalos has good food at a reasonable cost and I wish I would have tried this one first during our stay , then Nefeli is also good value and the food was nice. Resetto was a bit more let’s say upmarket and again we both enjoyed our meals there. Aqua Marina do nice Pizza and Moussaka and the Happy Hour cocktails from 6-9pm are also very good with some impromptu dancing from a few of the staff. We hired a car for a few days and spent most of the time driving in first or second gear, if you can drive an automatic then try to hire one. Fiscardo first which is a 90 minute drive a quaint little village with clear water and nice views. Then we drove down to Assos , we drove past the sign that said visitor parking and parked nearer the village , as we went around 3.30pm we were able to park but I think that may have been an issue in high season. The village nice to sit and people watch or go for a swim from the two small bays. The second day we went To Sami, now this has a lovely promenade (with beach cafes but the beach itself is quite rough with the pebbles we stopped and had a drink here then drove onto Antisamos beach about 15 mins away . None of the bars were open but they did leave the toilets open and the sunbeds and mattresses were free to use. Looking at the photos we thought it was a sandy beach but it is fine white pebbles and when you try to enter the sea you feel like you are sinking so be careful. On the Third day we drove down to Skala about 50 mins Hired a couple of sunbeds at the Metaxa café just as you come into Skala cost 15 euro stayed for a few hours then headed upto Poros. As you come into Poros from Skala you reach the Marina first, make sure you stop here if only for a drink and visit Remetzo bar which is on the far left as you face the sea . They do have tables outside but it is worth going inside and seeing the bar are that is built into the cliff. The Chocolate and nut Crepe for 5.5 Euro is enough for 2 people Yum. We then jumped in the car and went up the hill into Poros Village which both of us felt was not great . Then back to base . Doing all this driving in low gear over 3 days used just over 18 litres of fuel costing 34 Euro. We did the ferry trip over to Lixouri which took 25 mins and cost 3 euro each way payable on the ferry. If you take the car its 9euro each way total including passengers. The ferry is every half hour during the week and hourly on Sunday and public holidays. A Pleasant afternoon trip. I have to say and im sorry to be negative but the Mosquitos were a real pain despite spraying every night with 50 percent Deet spray both me and my wife got some nasty bites. We sprayed the room , we had the plug in blue pads and Citronella candles but still got bit. It is such a green Island and that maybe why. We met some nice people Jess and Myles and Jack and Courtney who we shared advice on places and restaurants with. At Kefalonia Airport the bottled water in the café is 60cents but a bottle of coke is 5.5 euro , can of Heineken 5 euro, Cappuccino coffee 5.4 euro a decent size sandwich (filled Roll) 5 euro, I wouldnt bother with the pies although big not much filling mainly pastry. In the duty free 200 silk cut 46 euro. Golden Virginia and Amberleaf 59 Euro for 5x50 gram .Spirits were cheaper on the easyjet flight, picked up 2 x 1ltr bottles of Jack Daniels for £35. I don’t think we will be going back to Kefalonia, we did see some nice places when we had the car but on average we did 11000 steps (5miles) a day and found the hilly nature of this island, the Mosquitos and access to some of the beaches tiresome. Make your own mind up its just our opinion and there are people that have a positive view of the island and go back each year.
