This was one of the most charming and comfortable inns we stayed at during a six-week trip to Portugal and Spain. Rafael was a considerate and accommodating host and made sure everything contributed to a pleasant stay. We were only there two nights and would have loved to spend longer. Since the approach bypasses the village, you may begin to think the location is way out in the surrounding countryside! Don’t worry: you circle around to unload, park minutes away, and you are right next to the main square. Santillana del Mar is a lovely historic village, with several very good restaurants (ask Rafa). We liked El Castillo, right on the main square. We were in Santillana to visit the replica of the prehistoric Altamira Cave paintings. Don’t miss that! A highlight of our trip.

We loved staying at La Casa del Organista! The old building has an interesting history, and each room is unique. We loved staying at La Casa del Organista! The old building has an interesting history, and each room is unique. The location is perfect, because it's a two minute walk from the main plaza, but provides a quieter setting. We liked sitting on the little balcony and watching the changes of the town during the day. There are also lovely sitting rooms for guests. Breakfast outdoors on the terrace was special, with a view of the 11th and 12th century stone buildings, and may options of food. Free parking is available below the hotel. Rafael greeted us warmly, and made helpful recommendations of what to see in Santillana del Mar, and also where to stop along the way when we drove to another town. We always enjoyed talking with Rafael! (He did warn us not to bump our heads on the slanted ceiling in our third floor room, but somehow we forgot!)
